CHILDHOOD IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE GOLDEN YEARS IN A PERSONS LIFE, WHERE YOUNG PEOPLE GROW INTO YOUNG ADULTS WITH LOVING GUIDANCE AND JOY OF HAPPY MEMORIES.

A lot of the children have not come from stable households and have not experienced the feelings of being wanted, cared for or loved.

We want our children to achieve their full capabilities. This process should be coupled with fun and enjoyment. We have regular outings to places of interest, local Aker’s trust which has archery, canoeing, rock climbing, visits to parks, the cinema, bowling, walks in Lickey hills and much more.

Our  staff continually try to engage with the children. We try to establish a routine so that we can inculcate a sense of order and familiarity. We stress inclusion and feedback from young people, use of communication tools such as communication in prints, PECSPicture exchange cards system, Makaton makatoncommunication technique that uses speech, facial expression, gestures, signs and symbols to convey information and more.

Using these we have been able to ascertain preferences of children with profound or even no speech ability.
